GRAPE VARIETIES
Dobrogea is generous and welcoming, and it is within her embrace that the grape varieties cultivated in Murfatlar have found their most nurturing roots.

Chardonnay

As you may already know, Chardonnay is a grape variety originating from France. What you might not know is that it was introduced to the Murfatlar vineyards approximately 70 years ago. Although it is a wine with Gallic resonances, we can add that it has found a new home here, on the lands of Dobrogea.

When you drink Chardonnay, you can sense the finesse and an aroma reminiscent of freshly mown hay or a small meadow of buttercups. In the realm of the unknown but delightful, in 1878, the poet Vasile Alecsandri received the grand prize for the best poetry dedicated to Latin culture at Montpellier.

Nearly a century later, in 1959, the Chardonnay wine produced at Murfatlar received an honorary diploma and the prestigious gold medal at an international wine competition held in Montpellier.

Pinot Gris

In the Murfatlar region, Pinot Gris might just be one of the most delightful semi-sweet and sweet white wines in Romania. Its appearance is exemplary: bright, with shades of greenish-yellow or gold.

However, wines made from Pinot Gris grapes can also be vinified as dry, resulting in medium-bodied wines with a floral bouquet and a good balance between acidity and sweet notes. They develop flavors of pears, apples and yellow melon.

It's well-balanced, pleasant, and, when poured into a glass, as refreshing as a gentle breeze from the Danube Delta.

Fetească Regală

Fetească Regală has its origins in Transylvania, but it has adapted perfectly to Dobrogea. It is characterized by a subtle, fresh aroma, reminiscent of wildflowers.

Our wine is associated with Romanian weddings and celebrations. It is synonymous with good times and even the renowned Romanian author Al. O. Teodoreanu mentioned it in one of his writings: "Among Romanians, Băbeasca is favored by the young, while Feteasca is preferred by the elderly."

Italian Riesling

It's time to learn more about a truly popular wine. Although, by its name, you might think it hails from Italy, the cultivated variety actually originates from Styria, Austria. But let's not get lost in details because, regardless of its origin, Riesling wine is warmly received both on its own and when blended with Pinot Gris and Muscat Ottonel.

It is poised, alluring, and exudes confidence for a good reason – the effervescence it exhibits when poured into a glass invites engaging conversations.

Muscat Ottonel

The variety that gave rise to the best-selling wine in the Murfatlar vineyard for many years, and probably in the whole country, especially when it is vinified as sweet or semi-sweet, produces unforgettable wines. Its honeyed notes with aromas of peach, pear, and passion fruit are well-balanced by a subtle acidity, making it an unforgettable dessert wine.

A little tip: drink this wine while it's young and fresh to truly savor its flavors and subtleties. It is highly aromatic and, when combined with Pinot Gris and Italian Riesling, Muscat Ottonel wine gains charm from its multi-floral scents.

Sauvignon Blanc

It's a variety of duality: it can be vinified as dry or with residual sugar, and it can be enjoyed young or aged. When you desire a dry white wine, we, the people of Murfatlar, assure you that our Sauvignon wine meets all your requirements.

With notes of ripe grapefruit, freshly cut grass, and a hint of bell pepper, our Sauvignon finds its way to any table.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Long live the king! This is the royal red wine. Through aging in oak barrels, like any truly princely thing, its taste acquires exceptional qualities, achieved through the harmony between the pedoclimatic conditions of the vineyard and the viticulturists' art, passed down and enriched from generation to generation.

It’s a wine rich in all the gifts of the earth. Wild and majestic, it possesses body, spirit, and a unique fragrance that combines notes of red fruits, coffee, tobacco, vanilla, and bacon.

Pinot Noir

Yet another wine that time makes not only good but unforgettable: a velvety, austere, reserved and meticulous wine. A globally renowned variety that has brought fame to Burgundy wines (France).

This variety has been cultivated in Murfatlar since the beginning of the century. The bright sun, limestone soils, and the specific microclimate transfer the wine unique qualities, ready to be showcased in the first tasting.

Băbească Neagră

A grape variety, a native variety that has brought fame to vineyards from Moldova, especially in Nicorești. The pedoclimatic conditions of Murfatlar transform the Băbească Neagră variety into a perfect one for a light wine, with an intense pink or sometimes red-violet color.

In the Murfatlar wine gallery, there are other varieties, each with well-defined positions, each appreciated for its value and qualities.

Merlot

Short and to the point: this is a dry wine that becomes friendly as you drink it. This productive vine variety is renowned for the delicacy of its wine's bouquet. With age, it develops a flavor of flowers and wild berries.

Although it's known for a relatively short time in Dobrogea, in recent years, the area planted with Merlot has increased, much to the delight of those who wish to taste this brilliant wine.

Rhein Riesling

Riesling de Rin is a grape variety attested since the 15th century in the Teutonic region, but it only made its appearance in our lands in the 19th century.

It gives rise to an aromatic wine with primary notes reminiscent of nectarines, apricots, yellow apples, and pears. Besides the fruit, you'll often sense notes of honey, jasmine, lime peel, as well as the famous petrol notes that characterize it. Its high acidity makes it an ideal candidate for aging in the bottle for several years.

Fetească Albă

The most cultivated variety in our country, this variety has received colloquial names over time. With a very high sugar accumulation capacity, it has a delicate, pleasant and balanced taste. Aged in oak barrels, it has a bouquet with notes of dried fruits, which enhance its quality.

This variety produces quality Romanian sparkling wines, ready to compete on the international stage. The wine made from Fetească variety has the strength to preserve its character, which is why we proudly call it "the pride of Romanian vineyards.”

Tămâioasă Românească

A grape variety originating from the ancient Greek lands, cultivated for at least two millennia on our country's territory.

A lover of the long autumn, this variety is sensitive to extreme weather conditions: frost, drought, humidity. Its bouquet delights with floral undertones – apricots, pears, basil, honey, yellow watermelon or pineapple.

As a recommendation, this variety is an excellent companion for salads and appetizers, as well as spicier dishes such as Asian cuisine.

Cramposie

Although it is cultivated in the south and southeast of Romania, it is one of the varieties that have remained in the shadows, underappreciated despite its many qualities. Originating from grapes with mixed properties, suitable for both consumption and winemaking, the variety stands out due to the pleasant appearance and taste of its berries.

It is one of the most resistant varieties for storage over the winter. Legends of winemakers say that it should be harvested three days after the first frost, when the grapes turn yellow-reddish and the taste is perfect. Wines made from Cramposie grapes can be paired with fish, poultry, and beef-based dishes, but they can also be enjoyed in between meals as an aperitif.

Wines from Cramposie can be paired with dishes based on fish, poultry, and beef, but they can also be enjoyed during a break between meals as an aperitif.

Columna

This is a new grapevine variety, approved in 1985 in the Murfatlar region, which is resistant to drought, frost, and mildew, properties that make it suitable for the arid regions of Dobrogea. It was created through selections and hybridizations between Pinot Gris and Grasă de Cotnari, an intermediary variety between Pinot Gris and Italian Riesling, but with superior taste quality compared to Italian Riesling.

The grapes reach full maturity in the second half of September and are used in the production of premium white wines, offering fruity and fresh aromas.

Fetească Neagră

Undoubtedly, a popular and appreciated wine. One of the most well-known grape varieties in Romania, almost a national emblem that represents us. This variety produces red wines with a violet-ruby color. The notes are fruity, reminiscent of blackcurrants, blackberries, dried plums; it also presents spicy notes of pepper and vanilla. Its texture is velvety and complex, and the taste's finish is often long and luscious.

This variety is known for red wines with aging potential, with time adding a broad taste, with rippe yet fine tannins.

Shiraz

One of the most famous red wine varieties in the world. Its generous taste of ripe fruits and its peppery, spicy or smoky undertones, as well as its aging potential, have rightfully earned it high popularity.

It originates from France, from the Rhone wine region, but it has become famous and adapted with very good results in Australia. It is highly versatile in culinary pairings – from burgers and beef steaks to matured hard cheeses – all are perfect matches for this unmistakable-tasting variety.

Burgundul Mare

Originating from Burgundy, this variety creates pleasant wines with higher acidity, fruity aroma and strong, well-developed tannins.

Its bouquet features aromas of dried wood, vegetable notes like bell pepper and parsley, and the taste leads you towards plums and cherries.

Everything converges into an easy-to-drink wine, despite what the acidity and alcohol level may suggest. It is recommended to be served at a temperature of 14-15 degrees Celsius.
We recommend moderate alcohol consumption. Learn more here.
